A father (or dad) is a male parent of a child. A biological or natural father is the man whose sperm has been used in the creation of a child, through sexual intercourse or sperm donation. Such a man may or may not be married to the child's mother. A putative father is a man whose biological relationship to a child is alleged but has not been established. The term is also used for the man who has raised a child, who is not his biological offspring, such as an adopted child. As a parent, the father has a certain legal relationship with the child, which carries defined rights and obligations to the child, which may vary between jurisdictions. A biological father may have legal obligations to a child, such as an obligation of support, even if he has no custody rights to the child.
The adjective "paternal" refers to a father and comparatively to "maternal" for a mother. The verb "to father" means to procreate or to sire a child from which also derives the noun "fathering". Fathers determine the sex of their child through a sperm cell which either contains an X chromosome (female), or Y chromosome (male). Related terms of endearment are dad, daddy, pa, papa, poppa, pop, and pops. A male role-model that children can look up to is sometimes referred to as a father-figure
